Do you have a great documentary idea, yet you are finding it difficult to work in a creative vacuum?

Join me and fellow filmmakers for a powerful tool in overcoming the obstacles we face as “lone-artists”. In her seminal work on creativity, The Artist Way, Julia Cameron provides a roadmap for overcoming our creative blocks. The base of it is simple yet surprisingly effective for what it unearths: Three pages per day of stream-of-consciousness writing will have a profound effect on our creative lives.

At the heart of the 3 month journey is your own work. Whether it is currently just an idea or hours of previously captured footage in need of structure, we will share our progresses for critique and suggestions. We follow Julia’s 12-week program as a supportive group of filmmakers. The group meets once a week and is limited to 8 participants so we each have time to share. Cameron is part of the journey with her insightful chapter each week. We have each other to share our creative goals, to hold accountable and certainly to inspire. Ultimately, as with previous students, this can lead you to accomplishing your creative endevours.

I first completed the Artist Way in 2000. It helped me “get out of my own way” and produce an hour for National Geographic. I just led six filmmakers this past fall in this powerful creative tool. It is my pleasure to introduce and lead you on this path of Artistic Recovery.

Workshop Testimonials from Fall 2024 Artist Way for Filmmakers

Mark Dannenhauer

The Artist’s Way helped turn my filmmaking thoughts into writing. Working with Tom and my workshop cohort turned my thoughts and writing into documentary form. The workshop situation sharpened my thinking about filmmaking and solved problems in developing my film project. Tom’s flexible and adaptable approach progressed all of our projects by leaps and bounds.

I have taken 2 online documentary filmmaking workshops from Tom in the past 2 years.  I am always impressed by his passion for filmmaking, dedication to his students, and feedback. Tom possesses a unique ability to see and craft a story from what might seem the most random clips of video.  He has helped me grow as a filmmaker and given me the confidence to endeavor in my craft.
