“A year ago I left home to follow a dream of mine, and spent a month of immersive, creative study at Maine Media’s 4-Week Documentary Film School taught by Tom Donohue. A year later my team’s class project, Champ 5, has been accepted at two film festivals.”
Tom really took time early on to understand my project and even went out of his way to research the content, the targeted audience and the context around the film. Tom’s criticism of my successive cuts during the 4 weeks were candid, to the point but was also delivered in a very tactful and efficient way. He kept raising the bar for me and that was my motivation to complete a solid rough cut by the end of the course.
I was an editor for years, looking to broaden my filmmaking knowledge with this doc workshop. In a few short weeks, I contacted and interviewed a stranger, filmed his family event and came away with an 8-minute documentary that I am looking to expand into something much bigger. This class gave me a new confidence, what once seemed daunting now feels doable.
